Pittsburgh, PA.—The Advanced Leadership Institute (TALI) is proud to announce the appointment of three new board members as a part of its ongoing effort to strengthen and expand its ability to sustain its mission and organizational growth. The impressive individuals joining TALI’s distinguished Board of Directors are:

  • Leroy M. Ball, Chief Executive Officer, Koppers
  • Carlos Etheredge, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, FedEx Corporation
  • Jason E. Hazlewood, Partner, Reed Smith, LLC

“We are thrilled to welcome Leroy Ball, Carlos Etheredge, and Jason Hazlewood to TALI’s Board of Directors,” says Evan Frazier, President and CEO of The Advanced Leadership Institute. “These are highly respected individuals in the corporate community who truly believe in our mission. They each bring a strong set of skills, perspectives, and influence to enhance our board effectiveness.”

“I am very proud of the great strides that TALI has made over the past several years,” says Lara Washington, TALI Board Chair; President and CEO, Allegheny Housing Rehabilitation Corporation (AHRCO). “With the addition of Leroy, Carlos, and Jason to the Board of Directors, I am confident that we will continue to help TALI grow and evolve.”

About Leroy M. Ball

Leroy is the Chief Executive Officer of Koppers and serves on the company’s Board of Directors. Under his leadership, special emphasis has been placed on advancing the company’s people-first culture. Leroy joined Koppers in 2010 as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, then transitioned in 2014 to the role of Chief Operating Officer, with responsibility for the company’s global business operations. He was elected President and Chief Executive Officer in January 2015.

Leroy has had a relationship with TALI since its inception, serving as a CEO Council member. He will offer TALI’s Board a unique perspective with his experience in running a 2100-employee international public company. “I’m a strong believer in having diverse voices at the table to solve problems, and I have worked hard to enact that vision,” says Leroy Ball. “Koppers has had participants in the program each year, and we have seen success from the individuals who have participated. The fact that TALI has taken the program national is also amazing and adds to the prestige here in Pittsburgh.”

Leroy received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Florida International University and earned an MBA from Robert Morris University.

About Carlos Etheredge

Carlos has more than 20 years of experience with FedEx Corporation, joining the company as a facility Senior Manager in 2000. He rapidly ascended in the organization through a series of management positions before becoming a director in 2013 and vice president in 2019. Carlos assumed his current role in early 2022, where he provides strategic direction to recruit, develop, and retain a highly talented and diverse workforce.

Carlos has lived in Pittsburgh for a little over two years and has served on TALI’s CHRO committee for a year and a half. When asked why he joined the TALI Board, he says: “I believe in TALI’s mission, and I am extremely impressed with their direction and impact on the community. You can’t take leadership for granted, and a part of my passion is to make sure I can be positioned to give back.”

Carlos earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami in Florida and his M.B.A. from Dowling College in New York. He is the recipient of multiple company awards, including the prestigious FedEx Ground Five Star Award.

About Jason E. Hazlewood

Jason is the Managing Partner of the Pittsburgh office and a partner in Reed Smith’s Global Commercial Disputes Group. His practice focuses on both complex commercial litigation and financial services litigation, including numerous class actions related to both. He has advised Fortune 500 companies, global financial institutions, corporate directors, foreign issuers, and other various corporate entities. Jason has acted as lead counsel in jury and bench trials in state and federal court, and he has also handled matters in alternative dispute resolution forums.

Jason served as an Executive Mentor for two of TALI’s cohorts. “I accepted this new role on the TALI Board as a result of my experience as an executive mentor and seeing first-hand the quality of the program,” says Jason Hazlewood. “The dismal percentage of African Americans in c-suite positions shows a glaring need for a program such as TALI. I’m very excited for this opportunity to jump on the boat and put my paddle in the water.”

Jason has a leadership role in his firm as managing partner, and he has served on many boards over the past 15 years. He is a graduate of Washington & Jefferson College, 2001, B.A., Accounting; and University of Virginia School of Law, 2004, J.D.
